ASIP 6.2 Overview
This addendum to Appleshare IP 6.0 training covers only the new
features found in AppleShare IP 6.2. If you're new to AppleShare
IP 6, be sure to review the AppleShare IP v6.0 and v6.1 training
first, for an introduction to the product and details about its
features and basic functionality.
This page gives you an overview of Appleshare IP 6.2:
The following pages on Installation & Use provide details on using
the new features introduced with this new version.
What's New in AppleShare IP 6.2
This update to AppleShare IP 6.1 offers performance improvements,
human interface enhancements, plus some exciting new features,
described briefly below.
- Shared User & Group: A primary AppleShare IP 6.2 web and file server can now share
its User and Group data with secondary AppleShare IP 6.2 servers
on a network. Administrators will only have to maintain one primary
User & Group datafile for the entire network.
- Home Directory support: Administrators can use Home Directory to automatically create
virtual share points for registered users to store their files
on the server.
- Sherlock indexing of shared folders : The AppleShare IP administrator can now create a separate Sherlock
index file for each share point. Only one index can exist for
a share point.
- Sherlock Web plug-in: You can use the Sherlock Web plug-in to search the contents of
a Web folder. To enable this, the administrator uses the Sherlock
application to create an index for the volume on which the Web
folder is located (not for the web folder itself).
- Automatic mail database verification: The AppleShare IP 6 Mail Server checks and verifies the mail database
every time you start up the server or after a set period of time.
- Support for Real-time Black-hole List (RBL) anti-spam sites: The Mail Server allows you to prevent unwanted mail by checking
and blocking a connection.
- Remote POP account download support: In addition to ETRN, the AppleShare IP 6 Mail Server allows
the administrator to contact remote POP mail servers to retrieve
mail.
- New queue setting for placing new jobs on hold: AppleShare IP 6 Print Server now allows you to place a print queue's
incoming jobs on hold. This allows the user to release jobs one
at a time without putting the queue on hold.
- Secure printing queues for Windows clients: AppleShare IP 6 Print Server allows Windows-based LPD clients
access to a secure (non-password) print queue. The Print Server
reads the control file that contains the user name to determine
access to the queue
- and more....
System Requirements
Server Requirements for 6.2:
AppleShare 6.2 has the following new requirements:

more recommended (with virtual memory turned off)

Client Requirements:
Client requirements are the same as with ASIP 6.0, with these
additions:

ASIP Print queue, Mac OS 8.5 with LaserWriter 8.6.1 is required.
- Remote Web Administration requires at the client Netscape Navigator
